പുനലൂര്‍ ടെലിഫോണ്‍ ഓഫീസിനോട് ചേര്‍ന്നാണ് പകുതി കച്ചേരി പ്രവര്‍ത്തിച്ചിരുന്നത്. ഈ പകുതി കച്ചേരിയിലെ ഉദ്യോഗസ്ഥന്റെ പേര് പാര്‍വ്വത്യാര്‍ എന്നായിരുന്നു. ഇന്നത്തെ വില്ലേജ് ഓഫീസര്‍ ആണ് പാര്‍വ്വത്യാര്‍. അദ്ദേഹത്തോടൊപ്പം ഒരു അസ്സിസ്റ്റന്‍റും ഒരു ശിപായിയും ഉണ്ടായിരിക്കും. ജനന മരണ റക്കാര്‍ഡ്‌ സൂക്ഷിക്കുക, വസ്തു വക വരുമാന സര്‍ട്ടിഫിക്കറ്റുകള്‍ നല്‍കാനുള്ള അധികാരവും ഇദ്ദേഹത്തിനായിരുന്നു. രണ്ടു മുറികളുള്ള ഒരു ഓടിട്ട കെട്ടിടത്തിലാണ് പകുതി കച്ചേരി പ്രവര്‍ത്തിച്ചു വന്നത്. ഇന്ന് പകുതി കച്ചേരി നിലവിലില്ല.

1948 മുതല്‍ പുനലൂര്‍ ഗുസ്തി മത്സരത്തിന്റെ ഒരു കേന്ദ്രമായ് മാറി. കൊല്ലം , തിരുവനന്തപുരം, പ്രദേശങ്ങളിലും ഗുസ്തിക്ക് വളരെ പ്രസക്തിയുണ്ടായിരുന്നു. ട്രെയിന്‍ വഴി പുനലൂരില്‍ എത്താന്‍ സൌകര്യമുള്ളത് നിമിത്തം ഇന്ത്യയിലെ പ്രഗല്ഭന്മാരായ പല ഗുസ്ഥിക്കാരും പുനലുരിലെത്തി ഗുസ്തി മത്സരത്തില്‍ പങ്കെടുക്കുമായിരുന്നു. പുനലൂരിലെ ഗുസ്തി മത്സരം തിരുവിതാംകൂറിലെ വിവിധ ഭാഗങ്ങളിലേക്ക് വ്യാപിച്ചു.
1948  ല്‍ പുനലൂര്‍ ആനന്ദ ഗ്രൗണ്ടില്‍ ഗുസ്തി മത്സരം ആരംഭിച്ചു. പുനലൂര്‍ റെസലിംഗ് ക്ലബിന്റെയും , ആനന്ദ ഫിസിക്കല്‍  കള്‍ചറല്‍ ഇന്‍സ്റ്റിറ്റ്യൂട്ടിന്റെയും ആഭിമുഖ്യത്തിലാണ് മത്സരങ്ങള്‍ നടത്തിയിരുന്നത്. പുനലൂര്‍ എക്സൈസ് ആഫീസിന് എതിര്‍വശം പേങ്ങോട്ട് കുടുംബവക സ്ഥലത്താണ് ആനന്ദ ഗ്രൗണ്ട് സ്ഥാപിച്ചിരുന്നത്. ചില ഗുസ്തികള്‍ പുനലൂര്‍  എം എം കെ ഗ്രൗണ്ടിലും നടത്തിയിരുന്നു.
ആദ്യത്തെ ഗുസ്തി പഞ്ചാബ്കാരനായ ദീപ്സിംഗ് മഹാറാണയും തിരുവിതാംകൂര്‍ കാരനായ നീഗ്രോ ഹനീഫയും തമ്മിലായിരുന്നു. പിന്നീട് തുടരെ ഗുസ്ഥികളാരംഭിച്ചു.  മണക്കാട്ട്‌ നാരായണ പിള്ള , പോളച്ചിറ രാമചന്ദ്രന്‍ , ഇലക്ട്രിക്‌  മൈദീന്‍ കുഞ്ഞു , പപ്പുദാസ് , കൊല്ലം ആസാദ് ഫയല്‍മാന്‍ , ഇരുട്ട് കിട്ടു  പുനലൂര്‍ സ്വദേശികളായ കരിക്കത്തില്‍ ശങ്കരന്‍ നായര്‍, സഹോദരന്‍ പ്രഭാകരന്‍ നായര്‍, കോടി ജോസഫ്‌ , കോടി ജോസെഫിന്റെ മകന്‍ കോടി തോമസ്‌ , പുനലൂര്‍ റഷീദ് , വിമലാഭായി (ഹരിപ്പാട്) , സരസ്വതിയമ്മ കായംകുളം എന്നിവരും ചിഞ്ചലി റാം (ആന്ധ്ര), ബാംഗ്ലൂര്‍ അമീര്‍, കാശ്മീര്‍ മേഹാബാബ് , ബറോഡഗാമ എന്നിവരും ഗുസ്തിയില്‍ പങ്കെടുത്തിരുന്നു. തിരുവനന്തപുരം, കൊല്ലം തുടങ്ങിയ സ്ഥലങ്ങളില്‍ നിന്നും ചെങ്കോട്ട , തെങ്കാശി പ്രദേശങ്ങളില്‍ നിന്നും ഗുസ്തി മത്സരം കാണാന്‍ ജനങ്ങള്‍ എത്തിയിരുന്നു.

അക്കാലത്ത് ഗുസ്തി ഭ്രമം പുനലൂരില്‍ പടര്‍ന്നു പിടിച്ചിരുന്നു. ട്രാവന്‍കൂര്‍  സ്റ്റേറ്റിലെയും വടക്കേ ഇന്ത്യയിലെയും  ഗുസ്തിക്കാര്‍ സ്ഥിരമായി പുനലുരിലെത്തി താവളമടിക്കും . ഗുസ്തിയിലുള്ള ആവേശം ജനങ്ങള്‍ക്കുണ്ടാവാന്‍ വേണ്ടി പുനലുരിലെത്തുന്ന ഫയല്‍വാന്മാര്‍ പുനലൂര്‍  ടൗണിലൂടെ തനിയെ പ്രകടനം നടത്തുക ഒരു പതിവുള്ള കാഴ്ചയായിരുന്നു. പളപളപ്പന്‍ പൈജാമയും മുട്ടിനു താഴെ വരെ വരുന്ന ജുബ്ബയും ധരിച്ചിരിക്കും. കൈയില്‍ വളയും കഴുത്തില്‍ ഏലസ്സും കെട്ടിയിരിക്കും. കൈയില്‍ മുക്കാകോണ്‍ നീളമുള്ള ഒരു ചുവന്ന കൈലേസു കാണും അത് ആകാശത്തേക്ക് വീശി റോഡിന്റെ നടുവിലുടെ നടന്നു നീങ്ങുന്നു. ടൌണില്‍ നിന്നും തൂക്കുപാലം വരെയും തിരിച്ചു ചെമ്മന്തുര്‍ വരെയും പോകും ഇതിനിടയില്‍ റോഡില്‍ വച്ച് ചില ഗുസ്തി പ്രകടനങ്ങളും , അലര്‍ച്ചയും, അട്ടഹാസങ്ങളും നടത്തി ജനശ്രദ്ധ പിടിച്ചു പറ്റും ഇത് കണ്ടു ഗുസ്തി പിടിപ്പിക്കാന്‍ കൊണ്ട്രാക്‌ടറന്മാര്‍  ഉണ്ടാവുകയാണ് പതിവ്.
കാളവണ്ടിയിലാണ് പലപ്പോഴും പരസ്യം നടത്തുന്നത്. കാളവണ്ടിയുടെ രണ്ടു വശങ്ങളിലും ഗുസ്തിക്കാരുടെ പേരും, സ്ഥലവും, അവരുടെ വരച്ച ചിത്രങ്ങളും ബോഡില്‍ എഴുതി കെട്ടിയിരിക്കും. ചെണ്ട കൊട്ടി ടൌണിന്റെ എല്ലാ ഭാഗങ്ങളിലും എത്തി നോട്ടീസ് വിതരണം നടത്തുന്നു. കാളവണ്ടിയില്‍ മിക്കവാറും ഒരു ഗുസ്ഥിക്കാരനും കാണും അയാള്‍ കൈലേസ് വീശി ഗുസ്തി പ്രകടനങ്ങള്‍ നടത്തി തന്നെ കീഴ്പെടുത്താന്‍ തയ്യാറുള്ളവരെ ഗോദയിലേക്ക് ക്ഷണിക്കുന്നു. ഇയാളുടെ ഈ പ്രകടനവും അട്ടഹാസങ്ങളും കാണാനും പ്രോത്സാഹിപ്പിക്കാനും ഗുസ്ഥി പ്രിയന്മാരും നിരവധി കുട്ടികളും കാളവണ്ടിയുടെ പുറകില്‍ ഉണ്ടായിരിക്കും. ടിക്കറ്റ് വച്ചായിരിക്കും നിശ്ചിത ദിവസങ്ങളില്‍ ഗുസ്തി നടത്തുക. ഗുസ്തി കാണാന്‍ കനത്ത ജന പ്രവാഹം അക്കാലത്തുണ്ടായിരുന്നു.

പകുതി കച്ചേരിയോട് ചേര്‍ന്ന് ഒരു വരാന്തയും അകത്തു രണ്ടു മുറികളുമുള്ള ഒരു ഓടിട്ട കെട്ടിടം ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു. ചൌക്ക എന്നാണ്  ഇവിടം അറിയപ്പെട്ടിരുന്നത്. കേന്ദ്രസര്‍ക്കാരിന്റെ കീഴിലുള്ള ഉദ്യോഗസ്ഥന്മാരുടെ ചെക്കിംഗ് ആഫീസായിരുന്നു ചൌക്ക. മറ്റു സംസ്ഥാനങ്ങളില്‍ നിന്നും ട്രയിനില്‍ കൊണ്ട് വരുന്ന സാധനങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് നികുതി ചുമത്തുന്നത് ഈ ചൌക്കയിലെ ഉദ്യോഗസ്ഥന്മാരായിരുന്നു. അതുപോലെ ഇവിടെ നിന്നും മറ്റു സംസ്ഥാനങ്ങളിലേക്ക് അയക്കുന്ന സാധനങ്ങള്‍ക്കും നികുതി പിരിച്ചിരുന്നു. നൂറിലധികം വര്‍ഷം പഴക്കമുള്ള ഈ ചൌക്ക അടുത്തകാലം വരെ വലിയ കേടു കുടാതെ നിന്നിരുന്നു. നാലു ചുറ്റും  കടകള്‍ മൂലം മറ്റാര്ക്കുമിത് കാണാന്‍ കഴിഞ്ഞില്ല. ഏതാനും മാസങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് മുന്‍പ് ചൌക്ക പ്രവര്‍ത്തിച്ച കെട്ടിടം അപ്രത്യക്ഷമായിരിക്കുന്നു. 
ഓര്‍മ്മക്കായ് അടിത്തറ മാത്രമേ ഉള്ളു. ഇന്നും ചൌക്ക റോഡ്‌ എന്നാണ് അറിയപ്പെടുന്നത്. ചൌക്ക റോഡ്‌ കടന്നു വേണം റെയില്‍വേ സ്റ്റേഷനിലെക്കും  പുനലൂര്‍ പപ്പെര്മില്ലിലേക്കും പോകാന്‍ .

പഴയ കാലത്ത് നികുതി പിരിക്കുന്ന ഉദ്യോഗസ്ഥനെ മുതലു പിടിക്കാരന്‍ എന്നാണ് വിളിച്ചു വന്നത്. ഇന്നത്തെ ട്രഷറി ഓഫിസര്‍ ആണ് അന്നത്തെ മുതലു പിടിക്കാരന്‍. തിരുവിതാംകൂറിന്റെ ഒരു രൂപ വെള്ളി നാണയത്തിനു 28 ചക്ക്രമായിരുന്നെങ്കില്‍ ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് വെള്ളിനാണയത്തിനു ഇരുപതിയെട്ടര ചക്രമായിരുന്നു അന്ന് നിശ്ചയിച്ചിരുന്നത്. ഏഴു പണം ഒരു രൂപയായും ഒരു പണത്തിനു നാല് ചക്രമായും ക്രയ വിക്രയം നടത്തിയിരുന്നു.
            സര്‍ക്കാര്‍ ആഫീസുകളിലെ ഉദ്യോഗസ്ഥന്മാര്‍ക്ക് ശമ്പളം ലഭിച്ചിരുന്നത് വെള്ളി നാണയങ്ങളും ചെമ്പ് നാണയങ്ങളും ആയിട്ടായിരുന്നു. പത്താനാപുരം താലൂക്കിലുള്ള ഉദ്യോഗസ്ഥന്മാര്‍ക്ക് പുനലുരിലെ മുതലു പിടിക്കാരനായിരുന്നു ശമ്പളം കൊടുക്കുന്നതിനുള്ള പണം അനുവദിച്ചിരുന്നത്. ഈ അനുവദിക്കുന്ന തുക വെള്ളി രൂപായും ചക്രവും പണവുമായിട്ടയിരുന്നു.  ഓരോ സര്‍ക്കാര്‍ സ്ഥാപനത്തിലേക്കും ശമ്പളത്തുക കൊണ്ടുപോകാന്‍ വരുന്നവര്‍ കട്ടിയുള്ളൊരു ചാക്കും കൊണ്ടു പോകുമായിരുന്നു. മുതലു പിടിക്കാരന്‍ തിട്ടപ്പെടുത്തി കൊടുക്കുന്ന തുക മണിക്കൂറുകള്‍ എണ്ണി തിട്ടപ്പെടുത്തി ചാക്കിലാക്കി കൊണ്ടുപോകുന്നു. ഭാരചാക്കുമായി പോകുന്നത് തന്നെ അന്ന് പരിതാപകരമായിരുന്നു.ഇപ്പോഴത്തെ താലൂക്കാഫീസിന്റെ ഒരു ഭാഗത്താണ് അന്ന് മുതലു പിടിക്കാരന്റെ ആഫീസ് പ്രവര്‍ത്തിച്ചിരുന്നത്. ചക്രത്തിന്റെ ഒരു വശത്ത് മഹാരാജാവിന്റെ മുദ്രയും മറുവശത്ത് ഒരു ശംഖും രണ്ടാനകളും ഉണ്ടായിരിക്കും. ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് രൂപയില്‍ ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് ചക്രവര്‍ത്തിയുടെ മുദ്രയും ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു.

ഇന്നത്തെ പോസ്റ്റ്‌ ഓഫീസിനു അന്ന് അഞ്ചല്‍ ആഫീസ് എന്നാണ് പറയുന്നത്. ഇപ്പോള്‍ പുനലൂര്‍ ഹെഡ് പോസ്റ്റ്‌ ഓഫീസ് നില്‍ക്കുന്ന സ്ഥലത്ത് അഞ്ചലാഫീസ് പ്രവര്‍ത്തിച്ചിരുന്നു. ഒരു അഞ്ചല്‍ മാസ്റ്ററും അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്‍റെ താഴെ രണ്ടു ഉദ്യോഗസ്ഥന്മാരും നാല് അഞ്ചല്‍ ശിപായിമാരും ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു. ഇന്നത്തെ പോസ്റ്റ്‌മാനെ അന്ന് അഞ്ചല്‍ ശിപായി എന്നാണ് വിളിച്ചുവന്നത്. അഞ്ചലാഫീസില്‍ വരുന്ന കത്തുകള്‍ ഒരു കട്ടിയുള്ള ചാക്കില്‍ കെട്ടിവക്കുന്നു. ഈ ബാഗിലെ കത്തുകള്‍ കൊണ്ടുപോകുന്ന ആളിനെ അഞ്ചലോട്ടക്കാരന്‍ എന്ന് വിളിക്കുന്നു. ഈ അഞ്ചലോട്ടക്കാരന്റെ കൈയില്‍ ഒരു കോലും അതില്‍ മണികള്‍ കൊരുത്ത ചിലങ്ക കെട്ടിയിരിക്കും, ബാഗ് തലയില്‍ വച്ച് കോല് താഴെ കുത്തി ചിലങ്കയുടെ ശബ്ദം ഉണ്ടാക്കി റോഡു വഴി ഓടുന്നു. കൃത്യസമയം കത്തുകള്‍ എത്തിച്ചില്ലെങ്കില്‍ അഞ്ചലോട്ടക്കാരന് കഠിനമായ ശിക്ഷ വിധിച്ചിരുന്നു. പുനലൂരില്‍ നിന്നും ഒരഞ്ചലോട്ടക്കാരന്‍ , ഇളമ്പല്‍ വഴി കുന്നിക്കോട്ടേക്കും മറ്റൊരാള്‍ അഞ്ചലിലേക്കും ബാഗുമായി ഓടിക്കൊണ്ടിരുന്നു. മറ്റു സ്ഥലങ്ങളിലേക്കും ഇതുപോലെ ഓടുക പതിവായിരുന്നു. ചില അഞ്ചലോട്ടക്കാരന്‍റെ കാലിലും ചിലങ്ക കെട്ടി ഓടുമായിരുന്നു. ചിലങ്കയുടെ  ശബ്ദം കേട്ടാണ് ജനങ്ങള്‍ അഞ്ചല്‍ എന്ന് മനസിലാക്കുന്നത്. മാര്‍ഗ്ഗ തടസ്സമുണ്ടാക്കാതിരിക്കാനാണ് ഈ മണികിലുക്കം. ഈ ശബ്ദം കേള്‍ക്കുമ്പോള്‍ ആളുകളും വണ്ടിക്കാരും ഒഴിഞ്ഞുകൊടുക്കും. അഞ്ചലോട്ടക്കാരന് മാര്‍ഗ്ഗ തടസ്സമുണ്ടാക്കുന്നത് കുറ്റകരമായിരുന്നു.
പഴയ അഞ്ചലാഫീസുകളുടെ വ്യാപാര പരിധി തിരുവിതാംകൂര്‍ മാത്രമായിരുന്നു. തിരുവിതാംകുറിനു വെളിയിലേക്കുള്ള കത്തിടപാടുകള്‍ക്കു കേന്ദ്രഗവന്മെന്റുടമയിലുള്ള പോസ്റല്‍ സര്‍വിസും സമാന്തരമായ് അന്നുണ്ടായിരുന്നു. ഇന്ന് പുനലൂരില്‍ മുത്തൂറ്റ് ബാങ്ക് സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്ന സ്ഥലത്തായിരുന്നു അന്നത്തെ പോസ്റ്റാഫീസ്.

പണ്ട് മുതലേ വേണാടിന്റെ വിവിധ ഭാഗങ്ങളില്‍ താമസിച്ചിരുന്ന ജനങ്ങള്‍ വൃക്ഷങ്ങളെ സ്നേഹിക്കുകയും ആരാധിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തിരുന്നു. അവരവര്‍ താമസിച്ചിരുന്ന വീടിനു  സമീപം വൃക്ഷത്തൈകള്‍ നട്ടുവളര്‍ത്തിയിരുന്നു. ഓരോ വീടിനും ഓരോ വൃക്ഷത്തിന്‍റെ പേരുകള്‍ ചേര്‍ത്തിരുന്നു. തേക്കുവിള, ഈട്ടിവിള, മരുതിവിള, ആലുവിള, കൊടുവിള (കൊടുവിള രൂപാന്തരം വന്നു കൊട്ടവിളയായ് ) കമുകുവിള, കാഞ്ഞിരംവിള, പുളിക്കവിള എന്നിവയാണ്. ആ പേരുകള്‍ പത്തനാപുരം, കൊട്ടാരക്കര, കുന്നത്തൂര്‍, കിളിമാന്നൂര്‍, എന്നീ താലൂക്കുകളിലാണ് കൂടുതലായി ഈ പേരുകള്‍ വിളിച്ചു വന്നിരുന്നത്.

കൊല്ലം ജില്ലയിലെ ഏക ക്‌നാനായ കത്തോലിക്ക ദൈവാലയമായ പുനലൂര്‍ പള്ളി 1956-ല്‍ പരിശുദ്ധ ദൈവ മാതാവിന്റെ നാമത്തില്‍ അഭിവന്ദ്യ തോമസ് തറയില്‍ പിതാവ് സ്ഥാപിച്ച താണ്. 1910 കാലഘട്ടങ്ങളില്‍ കേരളത്തില്‍ ആദ്യമായി റബ്ബര്‍കൃഷി ആരംഭിച്ച റാണി ട്രാവന്‍കൂര്‍ റബ്ബര്‍ കമ്പനിയില്‍ (ചാലിയക്കര) ജോലിക്കായി റാന്നി, കറ്റോട്, തിരുവന്‍വണ്ടൂര്‍ , കല്ലിശ്ശേരി, ഇരവിപേരൂര്‍ , കൂറ്റൂര്‍ എന്നീ ഭാഗങ്ങളില്‍ നിന്നും ക്‌നാനായക്കാരില്‍ ചിലര്‍ വന്നു ചേരുകയും തങ്ങളുടെ ആദ്ധ്യാത്മിക ആവശ്യങ്ങള്‍ വാളക്കോട് സെന്റ് ജോര്‍ജ് ഓര്‍ത്തഡോക്‌സ് പള്ളിയില്‍ നടത്തുകയും ചെയ്തിരുന്നു.
റാന്നി കൂട്ടോത്തറ ശ്രീ. കെ.സി. ചാക്കോ, കുറിച്ചിയില്‍ ശ്രീ. ഉണ്ണി എന്നിവര്‍ ഇടവക സ്ഥാപന ത്തിന് നേതൃത്വം നല്‍കി.
ബഹു. ജോസ് ആദോപ്പള്ളില്‍ അച്ചന്റെ നേതൃത്വത്തില്‍ പുതിയ പള്ളി നിര്‍മ്മിക്കുകയും 2006 ഏപ്രില്‍ 6-ന് അതിരൂപതാദ്ധ്യക്ഷന്‍ അഭിവന്ദ്യ മാര്‍ മാത്യു മൂലക്കാട്ട് പിതാവ് കൂദാശകര്‍മ്മം നിര്‍വ്വഹിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു.
ഡിസംബര്‍ 8-ന് പരിശുദ്ധ ദൈവമാതാവിന്റെ അമലോത്ഭവ തിരുനാള്‍ ആഘോഷിക്കുന്ന ഈ ഇടവകയില്‍ 25 കുടുംബങ്ങളും 80 ല്‍പരം കുടുംബാംഗങ്ങളുമുണ്ട്. 

History of Knanaya Community


The Knanaya Community traces its origin back to a Jewish-Christian immigrant community. They migrated from Southern Mesopotamia to the Malabar ( present Kerala ) Coast of Cranganore ( Kodungalloor ) in AD 345 under the leadership of an enterprising merchant Thomas of Cana ( Knai Thomman ). This migration is considered as a turning point in the history of St Thomas Christians of Malabar.  The original community consisted of about 400 persons belonging to 72 families of seven clans. A bishop by name Uraha Mar Yousef, four priests and several deacons were among them. They formed themselves into an endogamous community by keeping their tradition and culture but co-existed peacefully among the St. Thomas Christians in India.These colonists  were welcomed by Cheraman Perumal, then king, and were given permission to settle down in Kodungalloor. Later, Cheraman Perumal bestowed them with 72 royal privileges, and it was recorded on copper plates ( Knai Thomman Cheppedu ). According to the Copper plates, these privileges were given to Thomas and his colleagues and all of his descendents as long as the sun and moon exist. These privileges are very important since all these privileges had influenced the community’s social life as well as the social status in the past years.
All knananites were Syrian Christians until the historic ‘Koonan Kurisu Sathyam’ (A pledge by about 25000 Syrian Christians held on to a rope tied to a leaning cross) when some of them accepted Jacobite faith and joined Jacobite/Orthodox Church; others remained with the Roman Catholic faith. However, they continued to keep their culture, tradition and practicing endogamy through the centuries.
On August 29, 1911 a new Vicariate Apostolic of Kottayam was erected exclusively for the Knanaya Community by the apostolic letter “In Universi Christiani” of His Holiness Pope St Pius X and Mar Mathew Makil was transferred to Kottayam as Vicar Apostolic. On December 21, 1923 the Vicariate Apostolic of Kottayam was raised to an Eparchy by Pope Pius XI. Pope John Paul II by a sovereign decision on December 23, 2003 reconfirmed its identity and allowed to maintain the status quo of the Archdiocese of Kottayam. On May 9, 2005 the Major Archbishop Mar Varkey Cardinal Vithayathil issued the Decree “The Eparchy of Kottayam,” elevating the Eparchy of Kottayam to the rank of a Metropolitan See, and appointed Mar Kuriakose Kunnacherry as the first Metropolitan of the newly erected Metropolitan See of Kottayam.

അപ്പോത്തിക്കിരിയും ധര്‍മ്മാശുപത്രിയും
പത്തനാപുരം താലൂക്കില് പുനലുരിലാണ് ആദ്യമായി സര്‍ക്കാര്‍ ധര്‍മ്മാശുപത്രി സ്ഥാപിച്ചത്. അന്ന് ഇന്നത്തെ എല്ലാ ആശുപത്രികള്‍ക്കും ധര്‍മ്മാശുപത്രി എന്നാണ് നാമകരണം ചെയ്തിരുന്നത്. മഹാരാജാവിന്‍റെ കല്പന പ്രകാരമായിരുന്നു ആശുപത്രികള്‍ സ്ഥാപിച്ചിരുന്നത്. ധര്‍മ്മാശുപത്രി വന്നതിനു ശേഷവും മുന്‍പും പരമ്പരാഗത വൈദ്യന്മാരായിരുന്നു ജനങ്ങളുടെ ഏക ആശ്രയം. പുനലൂര്‍ ധര്മ്മാശുപത്രിക്ക് ഒരു അപ്പോത്തിക്കിരിയും ഒരു കമ്പോണ്ടറും ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു. അപ്പോത്തിക്കിരി എന്ന് പറയുന്നത് ഇന്നത്തെ ഡോക്ടറെയാണ്. അഞ്ചല്‍, കുളത്തുപുഴ, ആയുര്‍, തെന്മല, ആര്യങ്കാവ് ,പത്താനാപുരം, പട്ടാഴി, കുന്നിക്കോട് തുടങ്ങിയ സ്ഥലങ്ങളില്‍ ജീവിക്കുന്ന ജനങ്ങള്‍ക്ക്‌ അസുഖം വന്നാല്‍ നടന്നു വേണം ഈ ആശുപത്രിയില്‍ എത്തേണ്ടത്. 1957 നു ശേഷമാണു പത്തനാപുരം താലൂക്കാശുപത്രിയുടെ പണി തീര്‍ന്നതും ആശുപത്രി വിപുലീകരിച്ചതും.

1930 മുതല്‍ ഏതാണ്ട് 1952 വരെ പുനലൂര്‍ ടൗണില്‍ നായര്‍ ഹോട്ടല്‍, ശാലേം ഹോട്ടല്‍ ,ബ്രാഹ്മണ ഹോട്ടല്‍, മുസ്ലിം ഹോട്ടല്‍  എന്നും (മലബാര്‍ ഹോട്ടല്‍) പേരെഴുതി ഹോട്ടലിന്റെ മുന്നില്‍ കെട്ടി തൂക്കുമായിരുന്നു. ജാതി തിരിക്കുന്ന ഈ ബോര്‍ഡുകള്‍ കണ്ടു ജാതി തിരിഞ്ഞു ഭക്ഷണം കഴിക്കാന്‍ ജനങ്ങള്‍ ഈ ഹോട്ടലുകളില്‍ കയറുക പതിവായിരുന്നു. എന്നാല്‍ ഈ ഭക്ഷണ ശാലയില്‍ ഒന്നും തന്നെ ഹരിജനങ്ങളെ കയറ്റിയിരുന്നില്ല. അവര്‍ പുറത്തു നിന്നും ചായയും പലഹാരങ്ങളും വാങ്ങിക്കഴിച്ചിട്ട് പോകുകയാണ് പതിവ്. ചില ഹോട്ടലുകളില്‍ പ്രത്യേക പാത്രങ്ങളും ഇവര്കുവേണ്ടി കരുതിയിരുന്നു. ഇതുപോലെ നായര്‍ക്കും ബ്രാഹ്മണര്‍ക്കും പ്രത്യേകമായ ബാര്‍ബര്‍ ഷാപ്പുകളും ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു.

ശ്രീരാമപുരം മാര്‍ക്കറ്റും വിഭവങ്ങളും
രാമപുരം മാര്‍ക്കറ്റെന്നായിരുന്നു പുനലൂര്‍ മാര്‍ക്കറ്റിന്റെ ആദ്യത്തെ പേര്. മുന്‍ കാലങ്ങളില്‍ 100 % ജനങ്ങളും ഉപജീവനം നടത്തിയിരുന്നത് കൃഷിയിലായിരുന്നു. കൊല്ലം ജില്ലയില്‍ ഏറ്റവും കുടുതല്‍ കാര്‍ഷിക ഉത്പന്നങ്ങള്‍ വിറ്റു വന്നത് പുനലൂര്‍ രാമപുരം മാര്‍ക്കറ്റ്‌ വഴിയായിരുന്നു. ചുക്കും, കുരുമുളകും മറ്റു സുഗന്ധ വിഭവങ്ങളും ഒരു കാലത്ത് കുതിരപ്പുറത്തും പിന്നീട് കാളവണ്ടിയിലും, അതിനുശേഷം ട്രെയിനും ബോംബെ, മദ്രാസ്, കല്‍ക്കട്ട തുടങ്ങിയ പ്രമുഖ പട്ടണങ്ങളില്‍ കൊണ്ടുപോയി വ്യാപാരം നടത്തി പ്രശസ്തി പിടിച്ചു പറ്റിയിരുന്നു. ഇവിടെ ഉണ്ടാകുന്ന മാമ്പഴവും കൈതച്ചക്കയും പ്ലാച്ചക്കയും അടക്കയും മറ്റും മദ്രാസ്സില്‍ കുടുതല്‍ വിറ്റഴിച്ചിരുന്നു. ഇപ്പോഴും ഈ നില തുടര്‍ന്ന് വരുന്നു.
            റബ്ബര്‍ കൃഷി വ്യപകമാകുന്നതിനു മുന്‍പ് ഏറ്റവും അധികം കൃഷി ചെയ്തിരുന്നത് മരച്ചീനിയായിരുന്നു. വെറ്റില പുനലൂര്‍ കമ്പോളത്തിലെ ഒരു പ്രധാന വാണിജ്യ വിഭവമായിരുന്നു. ഇഞ്ചി കൃഷിയില്‍ മുന്‍പന്തിയില്‍ നിന്നിരുന്നു. പൈനാപ്പിള്‍ ഇവിടെ സമൃധി ആയി കൃഷി ചെയ്തിരുന്നു. ഇവിടെ നിന്നും പൈനാപ്പിള്‍ ഇന്ത്യയുടെ പല നഗരങ്ങളിലും അയച്ചിരുന്നു. ആസാമിലെ പൈനാപ്പിളിനെക്കാള്‍ മെച്ചം പുനലുരിലുണ്ടാക്കുന്ന പൈനാപ്പിളിനായിരുന്നു. തന്‍ നിമിത്തം ഒരു കാലത്ത് ഇതിനു നല്ല മാര്‍ക്കറ്റ് ആയിരുന്നു. പയര്‍ പച്ചക്കറി കൃഷിയും ഇവിടെ നല്ല രീതിയില്‍ വികസിച്ചിരുന്നു.
            ഔഷധ സസ്യ കൃഷിയും അതിപുരാതനകാലം മുതല്‍ ഇവിടെ നില നിന്നിരുന്നു. കുറുന്തോട്ടി,രാമച്ചം,മുത്തങ്ങ,ആടലോടകം,അമല്പൊരി,വേപ്പ്,,നറുതണ്ടി,കൈയൂന്നി,കല്ലൂര്‍ വഞ്ചി, അശോകം, കറുക, അമൃത് , ഞെരിഞ്ഞില്‍, നെല്ലി, നീലാമരി, വാറ്റ്പുല്ല്, കറ്റാര്‍വാഴ, ബ്രഹ്മി, ഇവ വളരുവാന്‍ പറ്റിയ കാലാവസ്ഥയാണ് ഉള്ളത്.
